How to Choose the Perfect App Icon and Splash Screen
Before anyone opens your app, they see its icon. Before they see your content, they see the splash screen. These two small pieces of design carry a surprising amount of weight: they set the first impression, build trust and help people find your app among dozens of others. Here is how to get them right.
Icon basics
Modern Android uses adaptive icons. The system places your artwork on a background and then masks it into a circle, a rounded square or another shape depending on the phone brand. That means the important part of your logo must stay comfortably inside the centre — roughly the middle 60% of the image — so nothing important is cut off.
Recommended sizes
- Logo file: a square PNG, at least 512×512 pixels. 1024×1024 is even better if your artwork is detailed.
- Transparent background: ideal for the foreground, because the system adds a coloured background behind it.
- File size: keep it small (well under a few megabytes) for fast loading.
Design tips for a great icon
- Keep it simple. One clear shape or letter is better than a detailed picture. Icons are shown very small.
- Avoid small text. A full company name becomes unreadable at icon size; use a symbol or a single letter.
- Use strong contrast. Make sure your logo stands out against the background colour, on both light and dark wallpapers.
- Stay consistent with your brand. Use the same colours as your website so people recognise you.
- Test on a real phone. Look at the icon among other apps, in different shapes and on different backgrounds.
The splash screen
The splash screen appears for a moment while the app starts. It should feel calm and fast: your logo centred on a solid brand colour, nothing else. Avoid long slogans, loading bars and busy pictures. A splash screen that stays for a few seconds is fine; one that blocks users for a long time will only annoy them.
Choosing colours
- Pick one primary colour for the status bar and buttons and one neutral background.
- Check contrast: light text on a light background or dark text on a dark one is difficult to read.
- If you are unsure, use the main colour from your website's header — it will feel familiar immediately.
A quick checklist
- Square PNG, transparent background, 512×512 or larger.
- Main artwork inside the safe centre area.
- No tiny text, no thin lines.
- Good contrast on a solid colour background.
- Looks clear when reduced to about 48 pixels.
Spend a little time on these details. A clean, recognisable icon and a smooth splash screen make your app feel finished, and they cost you nothing more than a few careful decisions.
